The Art Deco-influenced water tower at Jones Beach
The group of eight interconnected beaches at the heart of
Jones Beach State Park, on the
South Shore of
Long Island. Though other beachfront state parks in the area are nominally separate entities -- like
Robert Moses and
Captree -- Long Island residents like
Nita and
Kit tend to think of them as part of Jones Beach. Unlike the generally stony beaches of the
North Shore of the Island, Jones Beach is a white-sand beach nearly six and a half miles long
in toto.
Numerous events in DW and TWD take place in or near the Jones Beach area, and its famous water tower is occasionally referenced in the series as a landmark. The water tower stands between the two main parking lots that serve the beach and its ancillary buildings (the former swimming pool and the restaurant / food service / shower building).
The Jones Beach complex also contains a two mile long boardwalk, a marine theater, the local
United States Coast Guard station (part of
USCG Group Moriches), and a "still water" beach at Zachs Bay, on the inside of the long barrier island that makes up most of the state park. (
