(Also "sponsored noninterventional excursus") A wizardly cultural outreach program that involves young wizards visiting other planets for short stays, usually to visit other wizardly groups, family units or facilities. Normally the outreach also involves wizards from other cultures or planets visiting the home or facility of the ones who have gone elsewhere: so the program somewhat resembles the "student exchange" programs of various countries on Earth. Since the transits to other planets can be costly in terms of energy, the worldgating and other transportation requirements are subsidized by the Powers that Be.

Dairine covertly signs herself and Nita up for an excursus before the beginning of WH. However, because she does so without first asking their father for permission, Tom grounds Dairine, and she's required to sit the excursus out. However, Nita does go, and Kit goes with her, filling the other available slot; they spend the spring break period on the planet Alaalu, visiting with that world's only wizard, Quelt, and her family. Dairine and her dad, meanwhile, end up acting act as hosts for the "incoming" wizards on the exchange -- Sker'ret, Filif and Roshaun. (WH)

The geometrical solid produced by rotating a superellipse around its longest axis. (Also sometimes called a superellipsoid.) The superegg is a member of the class of so-called "Lamé solids", named after the French mathematician who first described them.

The superegg's characteristic shape is described by this equation:
Rirhath

Summary:

A giant type O2 star of the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. View of this star is occluded from Earth due to intragalactic dust; if it was visible it would appear close to phi Sagittarii.

This large, hot blue-white star is something of a standout in its neighborhood due to not being a variable. It lies within an open cluster that contains nearly two hundred very short-period variable stars of the delta Scuti, delta Cephei, Be, and LL Lyrae types, with the LLs predominating. Some of the stars have periods as short as hours or even minutes. Though stars of this sort cannot usually support worlds where life can arise, they do make for an astonishingly beautiful view from this system; so that this region of space would be a draw for intragalactic tourists even if Rirhath was not also the primary of Rirhath B, q.v.

Rirhath itself is stable: the Rirhait species originated on the sixth planet, and still maintains its relationship with its homeworld, although the species has undergone several diaspora phases in recent millennia. Presently there are many more Rirhait domiciled on other planets than presently live on Rirhath B. (HW et al.)
Steganographic gift

Summary:

The ability to deduce or intuit content and sometimes even context from written or drawn linguistic "raw material" without having previously experienced or studied the language in question. The ability is normally perimagial in origin.

The gift's name is derived from the cryptographic term steganography, which normally involves embedding encrypted material in other content in such a way that the presence of the encrypted material is not revealed. Steganography in the wizardly sense, however, involves the derivation of the language "payload" itself from the written material, sometimes even when the samples involved are relatively fragmentary.

When Carmela finds that she is able to extract some information from written material in the Cave of Writings underneath Arsia Mons on Mars, Mamvish suggests that she may be starting to manifest some form of the steganographic gift, possibly due to her relatively intensive studies of the Speech and (recently) her interaction with various alien cultures that use it as a language of discourse.

(Not to be confused with paramagia, q.v.) A talent which when it appears or is exercised is doing so as a manifestation of a being's frequent contact with wizards or wizardry.

One possible example of perimagia is Carmela Rodriguez's slowly developing manifestation of the steganographic gift, first identified as such by Mamvish in AWOM. One possible explanation for Carmela's development of this linguistic talent would be her exposure to the Speech since Kit became a wizard -- as the Speech contains enough power in and of itself to produce unusual effects in people predisposed to such, and Carmela was already involved in studying other languages when the talent began to manifest.
Persistence manifestation

Summary: Protected "Persistence manifestation" [edit=sysop:move=sysop]

Disturbances in local spacetime secondary to physically traumatic events taking place in a volume of space. The causative events can happen either in the past or the future, but the vast majority of persistence manifestations have to do with events in the past.

The causative event can be simply physical -- like an explosion or other physical force being applied to matter -- or both physical and emotional, as in traumatic injury to or death of a living being. The physical or physical/emotional damage sets up long-lasting resonances through the local string structure, so that nonphysical echoes of the original event continue to resonate through local space for some time. These echoes often manifest as apparent repetitions in present time of events long past.

"Hauntings" involving the apparition of beings long dead or past events often have this kind of persistence manifestation at their core.* Nita experiences one of these while visiting her Aunt Annie in Ireland, when she hears voices talking in the middle of the night outside the caravan where she's sleeping during her visit. Inquiry reveals that Nita has been hearing echoes of the voices of soldiers of Oliver Cromwell, who were posted on the farm's grounds hundreds of years previously. (This perception on Nita's part is possibly a pointer toward her growing talent as a visionary; wizards with visionary tendencies are usually sensitive to such persistence manifestations, and often attempt to access them as an investigatory tool.) The poltergeist phenomenon is routinely also a form of persistence manifestation. (AWAB)

*The "haunting" concept naturally also includes the apparition of beings who, having died in traumatic circumstances, continue to linger near the physical location, declining to move on to Timeheart or similar senior liminal states until unresolved issues are handled. Wizardly usage distinguishes these by a different word in the Speech (the lephairet- root) from the one used when describing straightforward non-volitional persistence effects (emetalit-).
Its western end is at an interchange with the Belt Parkway and Cross Island Parkway in Elmont, just on the Nassau County side of the boundary with the New York City borough of Queens; its eastern end is at the Heckscher State Parkway in East Islip.

The Southern State is the highway that runs closest to Nita's and Kit's Hempstead homes, passing about a mile north of them. Their town's main street, Nassau Road, crosses/joins the Southern State at its exit 21. A wooded spot inside one lobe of the Southern State's cloverleaf exchange with the Meadowbrook Parkway (exit 22 S/N) is where Nita first meets Kit. Their joint work on the spell Kit has been constructing produces Fred shortly thereafter. (SYWTBAW)
The Long Island Expressway is known colloquially to many Long Islanders as "the L.I.E", but also sometimes as "the Long Island Distressway" (for its rush-hour traffic jams which can sometimes go on for miles and miles).
Otherspace pocket

Summary: Protected "Otherspace pocket" [edit=sysop:move=sysop]

A commonly used casual name for a small personal-use claudication. (Sometimes otherspace pockets are referred to (out of habit) as temporospatial claudications, but most wizards building them omit the temporal component in a personal claudication due to power issues unless there are specific special requirements involved.)

Generally a wizard using an otherspace pocket will link the spell which constructs and operates it to their physical presence in a given volume of space. This way it "follows them around" and is always at a specified distance from them and in a specified location. The standard personal-claudication spell defaults to a "closed" status and only opens on command, to keep it from accidentally enclosing objects as the wizard moves.

The "ïnternal" size of an otherspace pocket is limited only by the amount of energy a wizard is prepared to spend on it each day. Most pockets used by human wizards for casual day-to-day purposes seem to average out in the 5-10 cubic foot range, as maintaining much more interior volume than that quickly becomes draining. However, in emergencies a claudication can contain much, much more, though the energy price for this is considerable.

(See also Temporospatial claudication.)
