Each day from the first to the twenty-fifth of December 2015, the Advent calendar based on this page showed scraps of previously-unheard conversation from the memorable Christmas party in How Lovely Are Thy Branches.
Now that the holiday season has rolled around again, we’re promoting the post to the front page once more. Also, we’ve extended the range of the calendar a little. Every page on this site now displays a Santa Tab on the right-hand side. Just click on it to get the Advent calendar to pop up.
Enjoy!

How lovely! Thank you!
You’re very welcome. π
Will there be an updated version of this fic that includes these snippets?
Almost certainly there will be. I won’t be able to put it on Amazon, though: it’ll have to come out of Ebooks Direct only, as Amazon’s bots get very upset when they find your ebook material freely available online.
So, yeah… probably between Christmas and New Year’s sometime.
Thanks! It’s good to know I’ll eventually have an offline copy to read if my DSL craps out (looking at you, Verizon).
There are a couple lines in each entry that contain the \ (backslash) character; is it significant or just a Firefox thing?
These are absolutely delightful–thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad you’re liking it. π
This is so awesome! Thank you so much! π
I especially enjoy the falling snow effect. Looking forward to reading the rest of these!
I like the snow too: it’s not overdone. …Glad you’re enjoying it!
This is wonderful, thanks so much! It definitely makes finals just a tad more bearable π
You’re very welcome. π
Just as a light tech issue, it looks like backslashes to escape the quote marks are actually showing up in the published copy.
Yep, saw that last thing last night, need to go in and swap all single quotes for HTML entities. (sigh) Minor, though, as you say. Thanks for the catch!
Re: the sand. What was that called? My great aunt got it for me when I was little. I never got it anywhere but in a pyrex dish to play with it in. I think I was too well supervised to make a mess of it. I actually saw it several years later in a store.
Thank you for this.
No probs!
Normally it seems to go by the name “Magic Sand”. Check its Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_sand
Loving each day’s bit of extra story and colour π
I was a little surprised there wasn’t more discussion of the eclipse, given how astronomically-minded some personages are. Also with the foreshadowing, especially if you’re aware of Sirronde and “Parting Gifts”. I was half expecting You-Know-Who to show up and be offered some mulled cider.

Today’s message says to go and download something, but it doesn’t seem to say where or whatβ¦halp?
In Vomit… should protoactively be proactively? I even googled the word and it matched no documents in google.
Thank you.
“Protoactively” is a coined word, an intended antonym to “retroactively”, indicating action taken further back in time in response to something happening now — not merely in anticipation of it. “Proactively” means something else and so wouldn’t have been useful here. –DD
Sorry for being nitpicky, but six geese a laying five golden rings and four colly birds. I love your work. This is a fun series.
Sorry, I just saw a bunch of variations on wikipedia five may well be accurate somewhere. I should have done more research.
Thank you
I know. The error was made on purpose, as today’s entry will make plain. — DD
“Tunguska Event Resurgence Containment”?! I would totally read that.
Thanks so much for this! I haven’t read How Lovely Are Thy Branches, although I want to and I’ve got Lifeboats. But this is a really nice touch of seasonal… ficlets, I suppose.
Thank you! π
I couldn’t stop laughing at today’s entry (day 12)! Eventually I had to just read the whole thing to my roommate, she was getting confused!
Heh. π
I think I pulled a muscle in my side at Ronan going “Omnomnomnomβ¦!” ;U;
I adore all of these snippets. They’ve been a lovely treat to look forward to each day, and #17 is particularly resonating for me today. Thank you so much for posting them for all of us to enjoy!
You’re very welcome! π
In Advent calendar 3 Ritual Practices,”No, sweetie, just Mrs. Or Nurse, but ” shouldn’t or be lower case?
Thank you
No, as “Mrs” is the end of that sentence. “Or” is the beginning of the new one.
I love the eggnog and nutmeg one.
And it explains why stuff doesn’t quite feel right “on the teeth”…
Please someone draw this… π
I love these!
The Calvin and Hobbes reference in HLATB made my day.
Thanks again for allof these. And a really Merry Christmas!
I didn’t get to read today’s and the link appears to have gone? Loved them all so far, thank you for doing this π
I should clarify, I mean the last story posted, not that I think there was one on Christmas Day π
I had a marvelous time reading all of these at a single sitting. Thank you so much!
Please count me among those who’d love to read about the Tunguska Event Resurgence Containment. π
Wishing you all a wonderful 2016!
Please to make this available annually!
These were a delight! Was there supposed to be a time-limit on them, though? I wasn’t able to be online after #17 was published, and now I can’t seem to open them.
This seem broken now — is there going to be any way to view these since Christmas has passed?
Do these still work? I can only get the first three days to pop open.
I’m trying to get caught up on these but only day 5 will open for me! Is it non-functional now, or is this an issue from my end?
