Someone asked:
Somewhere I recall DD posting a picture of what she thinks may have been in the back of her mind when she first wrote Roshaun. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?
(NOT the more recent pictures for the cover of the Interim Errantry books – what I’m remembering was more of an older anime-style drawing, a character from some other fictional universe, except I can’t remember which one, now.)
DD says:
Well, considering that I was (and still am) a big fan of DC’s Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld comics, I’d say that this guy might have been an early influence…
Prince Topaz.
In the early issues Topaz is affianced to Lady Sapphire, but he gets a bad case of smitten for Amy / Amethyst when she returns to the Gemworld, and things get a little fraught after that. Later he marries the Lady Turquoise and becomes Lord Topaz in his own right. There’s way more info in his page at the DC Wikia.
Anyway, it was the clothes and the hair that got my attention. Was I consciously thinking of them when designing Roshaun? No. But it’s amazing how stuff will crop up…
